ok, do you think that there is a minority online who are overly obsessed with the idea of a one singapore kind of identity? i love singapore and all things local like local culture unanimous across cultures such as kiasu-ism and the ability to speak in more than one language in one sentence. But we cannot deny the fact that we are a multi racial community/ multi national/ cosmopolitian whatever makes you comfortable. why do people question the reasons behind having the racial group on the ic, the monthly contribution to the racial self help group (charity group to put it simply. they were too concerned with the kind of group it is that they came out with something fancy like self help group but really it doesnt make sense on first glance so charity group) We are born and bred in singapore but our ancestors werent. it doesnt matter when your ancestors came down to Singapore to settle down, there shouldnt be any discrimination but distinction is natural because of the tongue, the skin colour, the culture and all. Distinction, but no discrimination. I am not better than you because my family name has been here longer than yours. I am not better than you because I am of a fairer skin tone than yours.
We are the same because we/ our ancestors decided that motherland was not suitable for living so we/ our ancestors came down to this nan yang and luo di shen gen. We are all here for a better living.
while we have the same goals and almost same history (since we all decided to settle here), we have different cultures and beliefs. And because of these differences, we have different lifestyles. What makes us us is the ability to live harmoniously despite the differences. Our mother tongue, Singlish because it is not totally perfect english/chinese/malay/tamil/hindi/punjab (i heard singaporeans not from the same race as myself speaking in their race's language mixed with english and even chinese dialect)
and that is what makes us unique.
We are one but distinct. ok
?
