This 2017,

This 2017, I will be a better person than I was the previous year.

I will scroll through my instagram feed and appreciate the efforts people put behind selecting, adding filters, captioning and taking that courage to post it up.

I will also see the beauty behind the facade instead of critiquing the other side of the story.

I will also open my mind when listening to other people instead of merely yknow, going through the notion of listening.

This 2017, I will be a better person.

I will not scowl when the other party has a different opinion as myself.

I will not be afraid to speak because I dont want people to know that I dont know,

and I will not put aside people when they ask about things I already know.

the first episode I watched was one of the early episodes with Yong hwa from you're beautiful because 15 y/o me loved yong hwa from the drama.
and i was intrigued by korean variety for their candidness, the cameras that followed the cast everywhere, the nametag concept.

RM opened the window to South Korea to me and i would dare say people from my generation. I was introduced to their Olympians (the swimmer guy i think hes called park tae yeon? and son yon jae), their famed football star park ji sung, their ahjumma actresses who still have their talents. Girls groups boy groups of course. the Korean food, the sunbae-hoobae culture
but above all,
the fascination that brought so many people to learn Korean as a language.

TV is an influential thing so when you make TV, you have power.

(i have been watching a lot of TV for the past few weeks bc netflix)

but i think, at the end of the day, at the end of this post, at the end of the Running man era, there has to be an end to every TV show because the people in it, they are more than Running man/men/woman

I dont know much about the Skorean variety landscape prior to running man but it was the fall of those shows that caused the popularity of RM.

of course one could say that the smartphones and increasingly smart nations and subsequently well connected people/foreigners led to the popularity of RM.

Like netflix's The Crown, when the organisation does not cater to the change the majority wants/demands, they die off. which was why Philip from The Crown wanted to televise the crowning of Elizabeth II.

similarly, SBS may be still obsessed with domestic ratings but what about the international fans who could possibly mean, economically, so much more than the S. koreans?

SBS has to renavigate just as all old, mature, dated organisations led by the people do.

Ocp

somewhere this tine last year, the OCP set in PRC in the 60s? Was abolished and we in school or maybe it was just me were really excited because it showed that outdated and irrelevant policies could be abolished and perhaps the ccp was not tht rigid afterall. Fast forward one year to today, lets look at the other ocp set in 1992. Now this ocp is more compelx than the 1960 OCP. Youl will understand why later.

Lets first look at the history of both sides of the strait.
In 1900ish, at the first sino japanese war, Taiwan was taken over and renamed formosa just as we were renamed syonanto for three years.
Formosa was under japanese rule for all the way till 1945 when japan lost the ww2 and lost all the other territories that did not belong to them before their imperialistic behaviour

In mainland china, where more action happened, the years after ww2 was tumultuous because there wasnt a clear party to lead. Party = ideology
The guy who pushed over the qing dynasty, katayama san, 中山先生 wanted a unified china that respected people. (I got this general idea from watching the soong dynasty movie) but after he died, his disciple, chiang, purged the communists in his party, KMT.
Communism was a popular concept then in newly 'liberalised' china. This ideology won the hearts of the people (in the 1940s?)
Ok so chiang and his KMT retreated to Formosa taiwan. I am not very clear about the taiwan stance in 1950s because they are not totally made up of the Han chinese. They had their aboriginal people.

So prc was sort of closed for the next thirty years until 1978 when they opened.

During this 30 years, taiwan ROC represented the idea of "china" as a country in world organisations and sought to be a global partner. They helped sg when we said "help we have no land to train our new army" so they said "come to me, and i shall lend you land" this was in the early 70s.

When PRC opened up in 1978, their land size and population size and ambition(?) prompted other nations to recognise it as The China. This led to ROC which was The China for thirty years. Roc could not paticipate in world stuff such as olympics

In 1992, the ocp was signed. This was not received well in ROC which led to the party that represented ROC to sign the ocp to lose support for the first time in 45 years to the DPP led by Ah Bian. Thankfully for the KMT, ah bian was terrible so they got back their support for eight years. Ma ended his term by meeting Comrade mr xi who represented ccp for the first time.

Now why ocp is complex. The fact that it means One China can be intepreted in many ways. Both sides of the straits can regard themselves to be The China. Since majority of the people who preferred CCP to their founding father's disciple's KMT back then have probably died, can the CCP still represent the people of PRC?

Next, countries such as ours that signed agreements with the china before prc became the china. Can it still be valid?

There are limitations to this quick rant such as
1. I did not explore how KMT came to power in taiwan and named themselves ROC
2. I did not explore the status of Taiwan before it became formosa

quartz reported how "donald dumb changed political journalism" or was it vice versa i cant remember. but either the phrasing, that was my exact sentiment at 3:30pm on Nov 8 GMT+8. I was sitting in clb next to my sleeping friend who previously mentioned is very self-centred (not a bad thing) and when hilarious still needed 52 more god knows what thing (found out last night that their democracy is also very 2.0) i was still so hopeful that dumb wouldnt get it.

why?

because of the media! wth was the media doing? in 50 years time when our children study how dumb won, they will unanimously say "the biased one sided media stoked fears that hilarious will win"

also,

the problem with hilarious not winning , i have to  add this bc it is not a fact, IN MY humble OPINION,

is not because she is female

but because the clinton administration has been tried and tested and it didnt deliver!

so as usual

the media will fan rage and confusion by calling it "the highest glass ceiling" walao eh, the media is really irritating!!!!

also, on us's democracy 2.0 which i found out ystd, and was quite surprised because

they always seemed to be champions of the voices of every man on the street.

btw some people actually get offended when people type things like "average man on the street" take a chill pill la, sister and brother. man as in HOMOSAPIENS ok...

Re: Re-calibrating

A few posts back i said im re-calibrating right? yknow after the whole donald dumb saga i suddenly have newfound interest in choosing America as a region! 为什么他们的社会会那么的，，败？it's worth a study, ah or teok kei! too spoilt for choice

a cheap joke

the people around me treat the trump administration as a cheap joke. and i say cheap joke because they use it as a one liner to incite laughter or grab attention. someone says "d. trump!" and there'd be giggles. but what is so funny?

us as a sophisticated democracy since they adhere to the structure rigidly and train their people to be advocates for this system of freedom and perhaps liberation.. so democracy is really exciting because you cannot predict the rational human's behavior

democracy as i have observed is like the heart in the human body. it keeps everything moving and the blood flowing. nothing is static and permanent. perhaps this is the beauty of democracy.

abstract ideas aside, i just did a quick google of what it will mean for Asia and specifically east asia. while the article i read inspired new ideas, i think that in the next 4/5 years, global powers will swing back to the east.

I obviously am china-centric not because im chinese but because i'm asian. in 1945 when ww2 ended, we learnt that the winners of the war naturally dictated the course of the following events, all to prevent another world war from happening.

it has been 71 years. of adhering to the seemingly better system. in my field of interest, we also see how states that leaned closer to them got the tastier part of the meat. in various aspects: economic activities, policies

i dont really know what i am saying now but im just trying to address that everything happens for a reason and we should make full use of whatever circumstance presented. this could possibly mean well for our region so lets not get swayed by the "extremely biased media"-d.t. (2016)

cant remember what i was wrting about. oh ya the chinese words. is basically what the conflict theory is about la. then there is another more...harmonious way of looking at things. so if i were to give a poor a name in this system, they will simply be 'a random guy on the street just like any random guy'.

ok so i think that they are invisible because i do not know of anyone around my circle of friends, classmates who are born in a poverty cycle and unable to get out. but maybe that is because i am in my own circle myself.

ya she said something like that but because she is an annoying person i usually just listen to it from one ear and out it goes from another ear. ok not really, it did leave quite a thought at the back of my skull because i do think about it whenever i am free... like now...

ok so as what i have learnt in JXXXXXE, in the society, J, everyone seems to be a middle class because everyone has the same pursuits, the same things they want, they wear the same clothes, they have the same opportunities and i think with these same all, we feel no different from the guy next to us on the mrt train with a abercrombie shirt and a herschel bag even though we are wearing a humble shirt from cotton and bag from like a goodie bag (those kind of tote bag used to hold brochures and a bottle of NEWater) . because the difference between the herchel guy and tote bag guy is prolly difference in taste.

in JXXXE, we learnt that there has always been an economic division no matter how 'middle class' the society may seem. in 2000 when i was three, we stayed at a humble hdb in a humble area and everything was quite humble la i dont remember any extravagent lifestlye like even up till 2007 when i was 10, my schoolbag was a birthday gift from ntuc. and i used it for two years. (suddenly feel like crying because i really quite like the kukumalu bag) and like 10 years later, it may seem that the bags i am using are more branded because they are no longer bought from ntuc or bata or china... (i also had a funny china bag) i have cath kidston (three actually) i have kanken i have this i have that. so when i compare with my kukumalu bag from 10years ago, it seems that 'wow our lives have improved so much!" we dont live at district 19 (as what i always thought SK is) we now live nearer to the mrt which is also another sign of an improvment in life.

but

the person who had an SPI bag when i used a kukumalu now has a marc jacobs/fendi monster backpack so the 'value' of my kanken as compared to the marc jacobs/fendi monster still remains the same as the SPI and the kukumalu.

ok this is just a minor point for my point about GINI. i am really trying to reiterate what i have learnt from JXXXXE that for societies/economies like ours, we have an escalator kind of system where everyone progresses at the same time so the gap between the kukumalu and the SPI is still the same even though kukumalu now has cath kidston and kanken.

but then, going back to GINI, what can I the cath kidston do for the other kukumalus who may have to use a kukumalu bag forever??

and what are the fendi monsters doing????

is education really the only way out???!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!??!

at the point of writing, i still do not have full understanding of these words and the implications. maybe in the future when i am smarter, i will write about it.

this one i did write abit on another platform called medium, i am on a lot of platforms now becausedifferent platforms have different needs but it is still written by the same old me whether it be dorothy dora or (my name).

but this whole influencer shit ass thing going on on social media is pissing the fibrous shit out of my large intestines. 

like what wise old W said "wah this is very NM (a mod)"

ok so my point is basically that these influencers (rolls eyes) are surreptitiously posting their photos (usually photos because people look at pictures more these days as compared to words (captions)) on their pages and pretending that it is just a day in the life of but they really are puppets of advertisers and i think thatit is really unfair to gullible consumers like myself because we all think that 'wow! mary lim uses this lipstick" "wow jane lim wears dresses from this blogshop" "wow peter chan has this watch!" so because, linking back to the previous GINI point, owning the product these influencers own seem to make our status more comparable to them . but really just think again la

• Density

this i also posted on another platform but to put it here for a more complete analysis. recently (actly ystd) i went to this place and met this dense person so dense i swear. SO DENSE I ALMOST HAD TO KNOCK SOME DENSITY OUT OF THAT WOODBLOCK DISGUSIED AS A BRAIn (sorry)

but this woodblock said a lot of insensitive things and me being a more inferior junior/female/freshman/noobie, all i could do was to shake my head quietly at a corner. perhaps i should have been braver and chide the woodblock but that is not in my nature la. i am a filthy keyboard warrior. do yall think keyboard warriors should be embraced or not? i personally hate them but am very guilty of being one because i am not brave enough (too cowardly) to stand up for what i think is right. or i do not judge that it is so serious that i have to voice out la.

• Week 11

entering the 11th week which is just 3 weeks before FINALS! all the best to myself lor. 

• Moving forward

i will quit the current thing i am in because of the people, the timing and my laziness. i will prolly join the 'cip club' equivalent as my extremely sheltered and if she wasnt my friend, self centred friend happily said she will join ok if she reads my blog one day, i dont hate you har!! being self centred is not a bad thing because one should always understand the self first before understanding the world beyond the self so we should always have the self centred mentality where we put ourselves in the middle of our world and see everything from our perspective. what fits? what doesnt? what should change and how to change? to understand this first one should be self centred lor. ok ya so cip club. because i found out that the school is one of the two institutions in our city state that offers help to children from j-l-n-k-u-k-o-h so perhaps i will join them after i tie up the loose strings at the current place haha

• Ambition and Ambitious

Ok so after writing a lot of papers this semester, i have kind of concluded that i am extremely incoherent in my writing and my thoughts so i hope that by signposting this post will make my flow of thought clear(er).

Went home with some new friends today and they talked about their ambitious-ness. she specifically used the word on herself. and the last time I heard the word which is also the place where I learnt the word was in sec sch cca. Like girls there will say ' oh so and so is really ambitious ' and the others will reply ' yeah she is.. ' and there will be this air of unspoken and almost unanimous feeling between the girls that 'ambitious girl' is terrible for being ambitious and she should focus on whatever is present. 

yet the truth is that 'ambitious girl' is probably just bad at disguising her ambitions. because (almost) everyone is ambitious. me too and i felt bad for being ambitious in the past because like ...

Digress abit. because we live on the first floor and my room is facing the walkway to the lift, every single damn night even at like 12am i hear obnoxious FOREIGNERS talking so damn loudly about things that do not need to be said loudly like ' what time should we wake up tomorrow ' capitalised foreigners because the tongue is definitely different (rolls eyes)

ok so i decided not to be ambitious ok wait but even in jc cca i had this little bit of hope that my 'ambitious' could be realised but i didnt get it la. but whatever because i couldnt even manage my own stuff .

ok so these new friends i went home with today were talking about what position they want to get into...what they think will make a good 'leader', who they think should be... ya da ya da

and i was culturally shocked because back in those days when i was exposed to these, no one will ever ever talk about these blatantly like everybody was so.... competitive? that we didn't dare to talk about it. talking about it is like a straight sentence to...jail....? you cannot talk about it back in my days.

so when these new friends were talking about it, i was silently judging them from my seat but after that when i was walking back home, i thought about it and i realised how obtuse and closed the place that taught me not to talk about it is. 

there is nothing wrong about saying 'i want to be an SL' or "i want to be in exco, ambitious, i know"-M, 2016. like these people are just really candid and open about their ambitiousness (i am not sure is ambition is the right word because I thought ambition means what you wanna be when you....grow up) ((when will i grow up then?))

then i heard something quite funny. the new friends were saying that Girl X should totally be XX (ok i still cant bear to list it out because this is the internet) but Girl X told them that she doesnt want to sign up for it because she is scared that she cannot get it. ok these werent the exact words, i put my words in her words. her exact words were something like that:

im interested but i paiseh leh, maybe if they ask me then i will go la. but if they never ask me i wont la..

so you can infer for yourself what Girl X's psyche is lor. 

but the new friends i talked to today made me realise this and i guess my saturday isnt that wasted afterall because how often can i still learn new things ..right?

• GINI

GINI is a concept taught in jc. when i was 17 just like amos y and joshua whatever from the hk umbrella (once again not using the keywords for privacy's sake) i wonder why the above two boys...men..youngsters had so much time to stage all that stuff they did, don't they have to pursue the Greater education? 

ok so GINI. how should i explain this... ok ill start in a very chronological order so you can understand where i am coming from

-BQQ has a crowdfund for her lawsuit. and it is on this site i came across a few months ago and was so impressed by their concept and achievements that i immediately signed up to be a vlounteer but eventually did not work out because i probably wasnt worthy enough lol. long story for another time la. ok so i was scrolling through the website again to read BQQ's story and i came across this other crowdfund project for kids from j-l-n k-u-k-o-h. so i was wondering why this place sounds so familiar and why are they raising funds for these kids. but i just stopped my 'wondering' there.

-At work ystd i decided to just list my tutoring services on C-a-r-o-s-e-l-l i didnt even give any detail about myself because my mentality was 'if you are really interested and eager, you will approach me naturally' (i think this is a bad mentality but since i am not desperate for it, i can afford to do so.) and shu1 bu4 zhi1, someone really enquired worh! so after discussing and all, we worked out something. then me being a more than rationale human, i got ambitious and was wondering if i can do more! so i was googling around and came across j-l-n-k-u-k-o-h again!! so i decided to find out what this place is. 

i mean if you are interested you can go and read up. i am not planning to write it out here because im too lazy. but i also suddenly realised (second realisation today) that the poor are really invisible! ok i think invisible is a very very 'conflict' way of adressing them. As what i have learnt in this particular mod which i do not even want to write out because it is a common mod ok but it starts with S and ends with E. so in this SXXXXXE mod, we learnt that there are a few ways
